Quote for the Day
When you don't think you can do something, sometimes things just fall together really well on race day and you totally surprise yourself. So it's worth it to put yourself out there and take some chances.

Quote for the Day
The body does not want you to do this. As you run, it tells you to stop but the mind must be strong. You always go too far for your body. You must handle the pain with strategy...It is not age; it is not diet. It is the will to succeed.

Quote for the Day
Sorry for two in a row, but I think these are good! I did a half marathon this weekend and noticed that for the last three miles me feet where stomping the ground and I did not have the quick turnover that I've been working on for the last six months. So I really focused on that, shortening my stride and keeping my upper body relaxed. As mentally hard as it was to do that, I knew it would it would make my running easier. Plus I kept the B-52's song "Rock Lobster" going through my head, trying to match my tempo to that quick beat! :-)
Experience has taught me how important it is to just keep going, focusing on running fast and relaxed. Eventually pain passes and the flow returns. It's part of racing.

"Recognize your victories."
JOAN BENOIT SAMUELSON
I love this quote! Goes with the positive thinking I was talking about. Every victory should be recognized and remembered. So then when things are tough, remember them and know that you can do it! -L

Quote for the Day
“The pros had finished the Chicago Triathlon two hours before and I was headed out of transition to go to pack and catch a redeye flight home that night. I was walking past the finish chute which, when the pros and early finishers came through, was packed with people screaming and cheering. Then here comes this woman, who is a little heavyset, coming around the corner. There is not a soul standing along the fence cheering. But as I am walking, I see her coming, and notice that she is looking at the clock. I turn around and it shows about 20-25 seconds to get under the four hour mark. So when she saw it, she just went into this all out sprint. I put my bike on the grass and I started yelling 'Go!' And then I started crying. That is actually my favorite moment of all in triathlon. I’ll never forget it. Her eyes locking into that clock and thinking: ‘I’m going to get in there. For me. I’m just about dead last. No one is watching me. No one cares. But I’m gonna do it for me.’ That's triathlon. And so that's a beautiful thing.” 2004 ITU World Champion Sheila Taormina on her favorite moment in the sport

Quote for the Day
"Some runners judge performance by whether they won or lost. Others define success or failure by how fast they ran. Only you can judge your performance. Avoid letting others sit in judgment of you."
HAL HIGDON
LaVonne's Note:
I love this quote. "Only you can judge your performance." Check out Hal Higdon's website, www.halhigdon.com. He has lots of great running and training information there. Many of my friends have used his half marathon training plans to prepare them for successful races.
About Hal (from his website):
Hal Higdon has contributed to Runner's World for longer than any other writer, an article by Hal having appeared in that publication's second issue in 1966. Author of 34 books, including the best-selling Marathon: The Ultimate Training Guide, Hal also has written books on many subjects and for different age groups. His children's book, The Horse That Played Center Field, was made into an animated feature by ABC-TV. He ran eight times in the Olympic Trials and won four world masters championships. One of the founders of the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA), Higdon also was a finalist in NASA's Journalist-in-Space program to ride the space shuttle. He serves as a training consultant for The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon and answers questions online for TrainingPeaks, also providing interactive training programs. At the American Society of Journalist and Author's annual meeting in 2003, the Society gave Higdon its Career Achievement Award, the highest honor given to writer members. An art major at Carleton College, he lately has begun to sell and exhibit his paintings in a Pop Art style. Hal's wife, Rose, hikes, bikes, skis and supports him in his running and writing. They have three children and nine grandchildren.

Quote for the Day
Bicycling has done more to emancipate women than any one thing in the world. It gives her a feeling of self-reliance and independence the moment she takes her seat; and away she goes, the picture of untrammeled womanhood.
